Flying Cars and the Paperless Office

Which one will you see first?

Not so many years ago people were saying we’d have flying cars, phones without wires and a paperless office. Well, one out of three is not too bad … I guess.

How many of you believed the promise of a paperless office?

There’s nothing wrong with a vision for a paperless office. In fact, it’s quite noble. However, the reality is … paper will be here for a long time. And that’s OK. This is not just because I work for a company that makes scanners or that this is the industry I have been in for the past 20 years. It’s because paper serves a purpose.

The Comfort Factor

Paper is comfortable.
Paper is predictable. Paper is Portable.

Paper has heft (some more than others), paper has physical dimensionality. You can touch it. You can wad it up and toss it. Try doing that with a pile of bits and bytes. There will always be some satisfaction in checking something off your to-do list … on a piece of paper. Kids, and perhaps more than a few adults, will pass the time making a paper football or a crumpled paper basketball game. Paper is comfortable.

The Future

Paper will continue to dwindle in use. As this happens the paper that “survives” will serve two opposite functions. One will be pure nostalgia (e.g The Book of Eli) and the other will be processes that take longer to convert to all electronic.

Future Processes

A few examples. Some processes are very slow to convert to all digital – Mortgage and Loan Processing is one area that is ready for the change. I’ve seen several attempts to convert the industry. So far, all have failed. Eventually Mortgage Loan Processing and Car Dealerships will go paperless.

The technology is certainly available – inexpensive collaboration tools and sites, digital signatures, and the hardware & software to support it. It’s just not cost effective yet. Or it’s not causing enough pain (i.e. cost – fines, lost business, compliance, etc.).

Survey Says

Who’s tired of the paper survey? Every event I go to … even events within the technology industry do all of their surveys on paper. I can think of a lot of reasons why --- portability, no login access required, easy to share your thoughts (sort of) and the ability to provide anonymous (candid) feedback.

The flip side of this is when the surveys are collected there is a painful and manual process of collating the feedback. Of course, in addition to people that don’t use a #2 pencil there are the ever present challenges of reading the persons handwriting (aka chicken scratch) too.

Questions for you …

Do you fill out paper surveys?
Would you provide more detailed feedback if the survey was electronic?
Do surveys need to be anonymous?
Paperless Tickets – The Good and the Bad

Some you will like and perhaps some you wont.

Airlines are Embracing Paperless
I use the paperless ticket option on United Airlines and Continental all the time. I like the portability. Sure, there are risks. What if my phone battery dies, what if I cannot access the internet when I need to pull up the site that has the barcode, what if the reader at the airport is malfunctioning. But these are minor to me.
Driving Infractions
No one wants to get a ticket, but to add insult to injury you need to take physical possession of the paper ticket as the officer hands it to you. Wait … this might be one for the wadded up basketball game. Would you rather receive the ticket in your inbox?
People Are Keeping Their Eyes on the Paperless Prize

The examples above are but a few of the processes that have not gone paperless and will take some time to do so. This is not all a bad thing. Ultimately people, governance and businesses will make the decision to go paperless.

What’s your favorite process
that still requires paper?

I’m a member of a LinkedIn group called The Paperless Office. I’m completely on-board with the idea of less paper. However, I’m also a realist. I expect some processes to move much faster than others. I also expect some people will always like the nostalgia of paper while others simply don’t have access to the necessary technology. The points I’m talking about here are related to industrialized nations. Paper will exist for a very long time in non-industrialized societies. That’s a topic for a different blog post.

As mentioned above the technology is available. There are inexpensive collaboration tools and sites, digital signatures, and the hardware & software exists to support the shift to a paperless office. The driving factors will the same factors that drive (or should drive) every business decision.

Companies will ask these three questions:

Will going paperless:

A) Reduce Costs

B) Improve Productivity

C) Maintain Compliance Efforts

What do you think?

What will we see first …

A flying car or a paperless office?

A Car When You Need It

Like my predecessor, I'm a Zipster (a.k.a. Zipcar member). I always intended to join a carshare service when I went car-free, but honestly it hasn't been necessary nearly as often as I expected it to. This is primarily due to the limits of the service, though: I've rented a UHaul for errands as often as I've rented a Zipcar, because there are no trucks available through Zipcar in my area! This means that furniture-related errands tend to be done with a UHaul.

In addition to the non-availability of trucks, I'm also a bit bothered by lack of distributed pickup locations. In Los Angeles, you can only pick up Zipcars at either USC or UCLA (or within a couple of blocks of those campuses), which makes me resist using the service for as long as possible. Nevertheless, I have used the service twice and have been pleased with the results both times. So, good when I use it, but I would use it more if it were better (are you reading this, Zipcar??)

Anyway, I wanted to share with you how I make it work: I have to ride my bike up to UCLA, then stuff it in the back of the car and drive it away. I guess I could also park the bike nearby... but I would spend the entire day worried about whether or not it would be there when I got back. So behold, Ruby getting a ride in a Honda Insight:
For the rest of you who are car-free, how often do you find yourself borrowing or renting a car/truck?

Audi A1 Sportback Concept Revealed

There could be a new junior hot hatch in town if the Audi A1 Sportback Concept makes it into production.

Although Audi unveiled the A1 Metroproject Quattro Concept some time ago, that was a three door model. The new A1 Sportback Concept is a five-door hatchback, and is a different design to the original three-door. Continue Reading ... Audi A1 Sportback Concept Revealed

2010 Astra VXR Gets Smaller Engine

In a move that will make hot hatch fans roll their eyes in despair the next generation Astra VXR, due in 2010, will feature a smaller engine! In an attempt to make the hottest Astra more affordable in this current climate of high taxes and pricey fuel, the current 237bhp 2.0-litre engine will be replaced by a new 1.8-litre engine.

However, don’t panic … we’ll actually be getting more power from the new unit. The turbocharged 1.8-litre engine will produce 240bhp, so the 2010 Astra VXR will keep the fiery temperament of the current model with a 0-60mph time of six seconds and a top speed of 150mph. Not only that, but you’ll also be getting better fuel economy and kicking out fewer harmful emissions, although official figures aren’t released yet. 2010 Vauxhall Astra Official Pictures

The first official pictures of the 2010 Vauxhall Astra have been unveiled. Clearly influenced by the design of the larger Insignia, the new Astra will be bigger ‘more upmarket’ than the current model.

Obviously the pictures are of a five-door model, but there will be a 3-door version styled to look more like a coupe (like the new Renaultsport Megane). Check the picture gallery below to see the design sketch for the 3-door version.

There will be a large range of versions at launch, from a 1.4-litre unit with just 90bhp up to a supercharged version of the same 1.4-litre offering 180bhp. Hot hatch fans will be pleased to hear that there is a VXR model in the pipeline, based on the 3-door shape, but it will be some time after the launch that it goes on sale. Speculation is that it will still use a turbocharged 2.0-litre but will be boosted up to 270bhp. Continue Reading... 2010 Vauxhall Astra Official Pictures

It seems to me that this post will find its fans among those who can’t figure their lifes without the mobility that give us cars. For those who have ever wished to obtain a certain freedom the car turns up to be the right way to it. It gives you the desired scope of capabilities when you are free to rush at each moment from one place and to be in several miles from it just in a few minutes. This freedom begins when you start off zero to sixty in three point five (petrol-heads will understand the hit of the moment), goes on when the sceneries are floating before eyes and reaches its peak when your heart starts beating in unison with the engine. When it happens, the minutes run into one fascinating moment and you forget about everything immediately, except the car, the high speed and adrenalin that heats the blood in your veins. But now, relax, make oneself comfortable in the capacious armchair, enjoy this fascinating collection of 3D cars and dream on about the high way, cool car and unbelievable freedom.

Modern Design Honda Futuristic concept car for Future

Japanese car maker Honda is set to unveil a new concept car at the upcoming British International Motor Show in London which will take place in less than a fortnight's time.

Wow This Greats beautiful design honda concept car. i think this design concept car for future because this car is futuristic.

What is green, soft, glows in the dark and can do a 360 standing in place? The Honda PUYO concept car. Although it is not literally green, not until it glows in the dark perhaps. With a design reflecting a cross between a space moon buggy and cartoon car, this concept car is pointless. Well, we mean to say it is all curves and soft bumps, and is void of sharp edges. Late last year Honda opened the 40th Tokyo Motor Show with the theme “For the endless joy of mobility on our earth”, and I imagine they wer

Honda has produced some pretty creative concept cars in the past. The Fuya Jo is what I call Over Creative. The car is designed for those who party all day and can use the Fuya Jo as a dance floor. With its out of ordinary interior this concept car can let the occupants dance while they are being transported to destination. Pretty much a waste of time for a concept car. One more pic

2011 BMW 5-Series

At launch, the new BMW 5-Series Sedan will be available with one V-8 and one inline-6 gasoline engine. The top-of-the-range BMW 550i arrives with BMW’s “reverse-flow” V-8 engine featuring twin turbochargers and High Precision direct injection for maximum output of 400 hp. The new inline-6 of the BMW 535i features a single twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, for the first time, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology. It delivers a maximum output of 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. The 535i and 550i will be available with a choice of 6-speed manual transmission, BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission, or new “Sport Automatic” 8-speed. Later, the BMW 528i will debut with a 240 hp inline-6 featuring lightweight magnesium-aluminum construction and VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology for efficiency and unparalleled responsiveness.

Dark Burl Ash wood trim interior trim is standard, appearing in sweeping expanses on the dash, doors and front center console; Ash Anthracite (gray tone) and another distinctive wood called Fineline Matte are optional.

The new 2011 BMW 5-Series will be offered in the United States with a choice of three gasoline engines. At its introduction, the new 5-Series will be available as a 535i and 550i. The 528i and xDrive all-wheel drive variants of all three models will arrive later in the year.

2011 BMW 335is Coupe and Cabriolet

The new BMW 335is models are based on the latest BMW 3 Series Coupé and Convertible, which have themselves each been enhanced for the 2011 model year. Of those updates, the 335is models retain the new high-depth LED tail lights, new xenon adaptive headlights with LED-lighted corona rings, and the new hood which integrates with the freshened BMW kidney grille. Above and beyond those changes, the 335is will receive new M Sport upgrades which include comprehensive M aerodynamic enhancements, high-gloss shadowline exterior trim, wing mirror caps in high gloss black, kidney grille surrounds in high gloss black, and standard 18″ light alloy wheels in ferric grey color. 19″ M alloy wheels are optional. Exclusive “335is” badges adorn each side panel and the rear of the trunklid.

The BMW 335is is powered by BMW’s widely-acclaimed twin-turbocharged inline-6, which displaces 3.0-liters and features all-aluminum construction. This engine further benefits from BMW’s High Precision direct fuel injection, Double-VANOS stepless valve timing, and advanced Digital Motor Electronics (DME) engine control system. The engine employs special DME software, contributing to an increased output of 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Through the use of temporary overboost in certain circumstances, the engine will produce up to 370 lb-ft of torque (horsepower remains 320).

The 335is Coupé performs 0-100 km/h runs in 5.3 seconds with the optional 7-speed DCT and 5.4 seconds with the manual 6-speed. The 335is Convertible, meanwhile, requires only 5.5 seconds for the 0-100 km/h run whether equipped with the 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed DCT. Maximum rated horsepower of 320 is achieved at 5900 rpm, and peak torque output of 332 lb-ft is achieved from 1500 – 5000 rpm. Temporary peak torque of 370 lb-ft is available under special high-load circumstances, such as when overtaking at higher speeds. The drag coefficient (Cd) is 0.30 for the 335is Coupé and 0.31 for the 335is Convertible. The vented brake rotors are the same sizes as on the standard 335i Coupé and Convertible, measuring 13.7″ front and 13.2″ rear.

2010 Bugatti Grand Sport Soleil de Nuit

The “Soleil de Nuit” – Sun of the Night – is another stunning example of how a modern interpretation of Bugatti’s core values “Art, Forme, Technique”: A very unusual colour/material split characterizes the “Soleil de Nuit”, the second Middle East one-off model created for the Dubai Motor Show.

The horizontal split in the lower part of the car – a synthesis of polished Aluminium, painted Black Blue Metallic enriched by mirror shine meshes – softens the lines of this Grand Sport and gives the body a new touch of sportiness. Blue Metallic in the upper body parts and also in the inner side of the (”Sang Noir”) rims, the outer side of which are in diamond cut, underline the exquisite appearance of this dramatic looking car. A strong burnt orange interior crowns the attractiveness of this impressive “Soleil de Nuit”. The Bugatti Grand Sport Soleil de Nuit, the Veyron and Grand Sport one-off models price is 1.55 Mio Euro and will be available for delivery in the first quarter of 2010.

New Opel Corsa Color Race Harks Back to 1970s Rallye Kadett B Sprint

Chevrolet isn't the only brand in the GM Group playing around with vivid colors and special editions that hark back to models of the 60s and 70s. So is the firm's European division Opel that has released a new exclusive edition of the Corsa supermini called 'Color Race' inspired from the late 1960s - early 1970s Rallye Kadett B Sprint.

However, unlike the sporty Kadett that combined exclusive styling cues with performance enhancements, the Corsa Color Race's upgrades are limited to cosmetic upgrades.

The three-door Color Race is available with a choice of three exterior finishes - Sunny Melon Yellow color, Casablanca White and Magma Red- and comes with a standard black hood as well as side and tailgate appliqués with a checkered flag motif, black painted roof and black 17-inch alloy wheels. The special edition model's interior features matching color highlights such as special seat stitching and vent bezels, a Panorama sunroof and a leather-clad steering wheel.

The Corsa Color Race is offered with the same range of engines as the other 2010 Corsa models including the new 1.4-liter gasoline unit with 87HP or 100HP and the 130HP 1.7-liter CDTI turbo diesel that returns a combined fuel consumption of just 4.5-liter per 100 km or 52.3 mpg US.

Pricing in Germany starts from €15,560 or at today's exchange rates, approximately US$22,500.

Alfred, to the Bat...Limo: Bruce Wayne's Alternative Ride

We never knew that the Batmobile also came in limousine form - obviously neither does Batman or the creators of the fictional character but that's beside the point. The limo is inspired from the Batmobile that was featured in the 1989 and 1992 Batman films directed by Tim Burton. You can see more pictures of the BatLimo as well as a video that we discovered on Youtube after the jump.
